Insulation Rebates
Upgrading your insulation doesn’t just improve comfort and lower energy bills — it can also qualify you for valuable rebates. Across British Columbia, homeowners can take advantage of programs offered by FortisBC, BC Hydro, and the CleanBC Better Homes Program, as well as federal incentives through the Canada Greener Homes Initiative. These rebates are designed to encourage energy efficiency by helping offset the cost of adding new insulation or upgrading existing areas of your home.
In most cases, rebates are based on two main factors: the area of the home being insulated (attic, exterior walls, basement, crawlspace, etc.) and the increase in R-value (the measure of insulation’s thermal performance). The greater the upgrade, the higher the rebate amount. For example, topping up attic insulation may qualify for hundreds of dollars back, while fully upgrading exterior walls or basements can return thousands. Many programs also offer bonus rebates when multiple upgrades are completed at once, making it even more affordable to take on a bigger project.
The CleanBC Better Homes program often “stacks” on top of FortisBC and BC Hydro rebates, giving homeowners even more financial support. In addition, income-qualified households can receive enhanced rebates that cover a much larger portion of upgrade costs, reducing out-of-pocket expenses significantly. Federally, the Canada Greener Homes Grant provides up to $5,000 for insulation and other energy-saving retrofits, while the Canada Greener Homes Loan offers interest-free financing of up to $40,000, repayable over ten years.
At Selkirk Insulators, we stay up to date on all available rebate opportunities so our clients don’t have to. We help ensure your insulation upgrades are installed to program standards and guide you through the application process, so you can maximize your savings while improving the efficiency and comfort of your home. From spray foam and batt & poly to blown-in cellulose or fiberglass, our work not only pays off in lower energy costs but also puts money back in your pocket through rebates.

These rebates are offered by FortisBC and BC Hydro and are available to most BC homeowners who heat their homes with natural gas or electricity. They apply to upgrades in key areas like attics, walls, crawlspaces, and basements, and reward you based on the size of the upgrade and the R-value added.
This provincial program builds on top of the FortisBC and BC Hydro rebates, making energy efficiency more affordable for all homeowners in BC. In addition, income-qualified households can receive enhanced rebates that cover a much greater portion — sometimes nearly all — of the cost of their insulation project.
Through the Canada Greener Homes Initiative, all Canadian homeowners can apply for grants of up to $5,000 and an interest-free loan of up to $40,000 to help fund insulation and other energy upgrades. To qualify, an EnerGuide home evaluation is required to confirm which upgrades are most effective and eligible.
Applies to all homeowners in BC, with extra savings for income-qualified households.

Provincial & Utility Rebates (FortisBC + BC Hydro)
Across British Columbia, homeowners who heat with natural gas (FortisBC customers) or electricity (BC Hydro customers) can access generous rebate programs designed to reduce the cost of insulation upgrades. These provincial utility rebates were created to help encourage energy efficiency, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and make home upgrades more affordable for families. The way these programs work is fairly straightforward: homeowners receive money back after installing new insulation based on two key factors — where the insulation is installed (attic, exterior walls, basement, or crawlspace) and the increase in R-value (thermal resistance) achieved through the upgrade.
This means the more square footage you insulate, and the bigger the R-value improvement you make, the higher the rebate amount. For example, topping up an attic from a low R-value to the recommended R-50+ can often result in hundreds of dollars back, while upgrading wall insulation or insulating a drafty basement or crawlspace can result in rebates that climb into the thousands. In addition, both FortisBC and BC Hydro frequently offer bonus rebates if you upgrade more than one area at the same time. So, if you insulate both your attic and basement during a single project, you not only enjoy greater comfort and efficiency but also qualify for higher rebates.
Eligibility is relatively simple: the home must be located in BC, you must be the account holder (or authorized by the account holder), and the upgrades must meet the program’s technical requirements. These usually include a minimum R-value increase in each assembly, verified installation by a qualified contractor, and proper documentation. Homeowners are typically required to provide a detailed invoice, product information (such as insulation type and R-value), photos of the work, and the total square footage upgraded. Applications are submitted online through the FortisBC or BC Hydro rebate portals, and rebates are usually issued by cheque or direct deposit within a few months of approval.
These rebates are an excellent opportunity for families to invest in comfort and efficiency without bearing the full upfront cost. When paired with professional installation that ensures insulation is installed properly (no gaps, no compression, airtight detailing), the improvements don’t just pay back in rebates — they also deliver lasting savings on energy bills and a healthier indoor environment. At Selkirk Insulators, we handle every detail: assessing which areas of your home qualify, ensuring upgrades meet rebate requirements, documenting the work, and guiding you through the application process. With our help, homeowners maximize their savings while securing the long-term benefits of a warmer, quieter, and more energy-efficient home.

CleanBC Better Homes Rebates
The CleanBC Better Homes Program takes provincial energy efficiency support one step further by adding top-up rebates and additional incentives on top of the FortisBC and BC Hydro programs. CleanBC is funded by the Province of BC and is designed to help reduce overall energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in homes and buildings across the province. What makes CleanBC unique is that it is open to all homeowners in BC, regardless of whether they heat primarily with electricity or natural gas. This means that nearly every household has the chance to take advantage of this program when upgrading insulation.
Standard CleanBC rebates can provide up to $5,500 for insulation projects, depending on the type of upgrade and the size of the area being improved. For example, exterior wall insulation often qualifies for the highest rebate amounts because it is more complex and expensive than an attic top-up. Basement and crawlspace insulation also qualify, making it possible for homeowners to tackle some of the hardest-to-reach and least-insulated areas of a home with meaningful financial support. Because insulation directly improves comfort by reducing drafts and stabilizing indoor temperatures, these rebates provide benefits that can be felt immediately after installation.
Perhaps the most impactful feature of CleanBC is its Income-Qualified Program. For households that meet specific income thresholds, rebates can be significantly increased — sometimes covering the majority, if not the entire, cost of insulation upgrades. This makes major energy-saving retrofits accessible to families who may not otherwise be able to afford them. By reducing or eliminating the financial barrier, CleanBC ensures that energy efficiency is not just for higher-income households but is achievable for everyone. The application process typically involves proof of income, homeownership, and basic documentation, but is designed to be user-friendly.
CleanBC rebates are also flexible in that they can be combined with other upgrades like air sealing, windows, or heating system improvements. In many cases, stacking multiple upgrades results in bonus rebates, further increasing savings. The program requires that upgrades be completed by trained and qualified contractors to ensure the results are durable, code-compliant, and effective.
At Selkirk Insulators, we know how to maximize CleanBC opportunities. We work with homeowners to identify which upgrades provide the best balance of comfort and rebate value, and we make sure every installation meets the technical requirements of the program. From handling the paperwork to helping clients navigate the income-qualified path, we take the stress out of the process. By pairing high-quality insulation upgrades with CleanBC rebates, we help families create healthier, more efficient homes while dramatically lowering the cost of getting there.

Federal Rebates & Loans
In addition to provincial and utility programs, homeowners across the Kootenays can also take advantage of federal support through the Canada Greener Homes Initiative. This nationwide program was launched to encourage Canadians to make meaningful upgrades to their homes in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, lower energy bills, and increase resilience against rising energy costs. Unlike the provincial programs that focus on post-upgrade rebates, the federal program combines grants and interest-free loans, giving homeowners powerful tools to fund both small and large projects.
The Canada Greener Homes Grant provides up to $5,000 toward eligible retrofits, including insulation upgrades in attics, walls, basements, and crawlspaces. This grant can be combined with FortisBC, BC Hydro, and CleanBC rebates, allowing homeowners to layer multiple sources of funding for the same project. To qualify, homeowners must book an EnerGuide home evaluation before any work begins. This evaluation is carried out by a certified energy advisor who inspects the home, measures its current energy performance, and identifies which upgrades will deliver the biggest efficiency gains. After the work is complete, a second evaluation confirms the improvements and updates the home’s EnerGuide rating, which is required to release the grant funds.
In addition to the grant, the Canada Greener Homes Loan offers up to $40,000 in interest-free financing, repayable over ten years. This is a huge opportunity for homeowners who want to take on major retrofits but might not have the capital upfront. Because the loan is interest-free, homeowners can invest in deep energy retrofits — such as full-home insulation, basement and wall upgrades, or combined insulation and heating improvements — while spreading costs over a decade without the burden of interest charges.
Eligibility for the federal program is broad: it is open to all Canadian homeowners who live in the home being upgraded and who are willing to complete the required energy evaluations. The process requires more planning than provincial rebates because of the need for energy advisor involvement, but it provides a more comprehensive roadmap of how to improve your home. The evaluations not only unlock funding but also give you detailed insights into your home’s efficiency, air leakage, and performance.
At Selkirk Insulators, we partner with energy advisors and homeowners to ensure insulation upgrades meet the program’s technical requirements. We provide the detailed invoices, product specifications, and installation records that advisors need to confirm upgrades. For our clients, this means less confusion, less stress, and greater confidence that their rebate or loan application will be approved. By combining the Canada Greener Homes Initiative with provincial and utility rebates, many of our clients dramatically reduce their out-of-pocket costs while enjoying a warmer, more comfortable, and more energy-efficient home.
